Courses For Deck Crew
The courses below are the ones needed by the MCA.
I recommend first getting you STC95 (this is a course for yours and others safety at sea).
After finishing this course the next step is your Yacht Master. This involves a Shore-based section and a sailing practical section.
After this you should be well on your way for a career on deck.

OFFICER OF THE WATCH
- Min Age 19
- ENG1 (Medical)
- 3 years yacht time (>15m Loadline length)
- Yacht Master Offshore – Shore-based.
- Yacht Master Offshore – Practical
- GMDSS
- OOW Navigation and Radar
- Advanced Sea Survival
- General Ship Knowledge
-Training Record Book
- Basic STCW Training Basic Fire, Survival , Elementary First Aid, Social Responsibilities
On completion of the above MCA Oral Exam and a fully approved Training Record Book must be presented to the examiner.
CHIEF MATE
- Hold the OOW Certificate
- Valid ENG1
- Advanced Fire
- Medical First Aid
- Yacht Master Ocean – Shore-based
- Yacht Master Ocean
MASTER 500gt
-Min age 21
-Valid ENG1
-12 months service as bridge watchkeeper on vessels >15m (load line length) whilst holding OOW cert.
- Meet requirements for Chief Mate
- Medical Care Certificate
- Seamanship and Meteorology Certificate
- Stability Certificate
- Business and Law Certificate
- Navigation, ARPA and Navigation and Radar Certificate
- MCA Oral Exam
MASTER 3000gt
- Hold a Chief Mate cert
- 2 years as OOW on yachts over 15m – holding the OOW Qualification
- Min age 23
- Hold all the modules for Master 500gt
- MCA Oral Exam
SEA TIME
Sea Time is considered as time signed onto an official crew list. To prove this you will need to show either a testimonial
MCA Training modules are valid for 3 years
